Steak as a healthy protein source

I was chatting to a friend of mine the other day about exercise, weight loss, clean food and sources of protein. I didn’t realise quite what a good source of healthy protein steak was until that point. I had always eaten it because it tasted delicious and can be prepared in some very interesting ways. Now I can think of it as a health food too!

Okay, I wouldn’t necessarily regard a butter basted chunk of rib eye as healthy enough to eat every day even if it’s tasty enough to eat constantly. However, anyone into their exercise looking for a healthy source of protein need look no further than steak.

Steak as protein

A lean cut of steak offers more protein than many other so-called healthy foods and not a lot more fat. Lean means cuts such as sirloin and tenderloin steaks and not those with lots of marbling.

For example 100 grams of lean steak is up to 28% protein before cooking and up to 35% when cooked. Lean cuts can have as little as 7% fat too. Red meat is also a good source of iron, zinc and vitamin B12. All things we need on a daily basis to remain healthy.

Iron is important for generating red blood cells and for helping energy transport.

Zinc is useful for strengthening your immune system, healing injuries and wounds and for maintaining your sense of taste and smell.

Vitamin B12 is only found in animal products and is vital for maintaining red blood cells, releasing energy from food and for metabolising folic acid. All things essential in daily life.

The key takeaway from all this is that lean steak, in moderation is a valuable source of protein and essential vitamins and minerals. If you’re trying to eat healthily, exercise or are looking for a good source of lean protein and tastes better than chicken, you have your answer right here.

Most of us may eat steak because it tastes delicious, but prepared in a healthy manner, like cooking it on a stone with very little added oil or fat is the way to go. So if you want to eat out and remain healthy, The Stone Grill has a range of healthy options as well as indulgent ones.
