Two top barbecue sauce recipes for sizzling summer steaks

With The Stone Grill open and buzzing and the sunshine finally here, talk turns naturally to barbecue season. It’s a short, intermittent season that we need to be prepared for to make the most of it. That’s what today’s post is all about.

We’re as guilty as anyone for buying a barbecue sauce at home for our steaks. That is until we tried making our own. We have found two superb BBQ sauce recipes that really deliver on taste.

Barbecue Sauce #1


  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 300g tomato ketchup
  • 100ml cider vinegar
  • 100g black treacle
  • 75g light brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tbsp English mustard
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • ¼ tsp mild chilli powder
  • ½ tsp salt


  1. Cook the onion gently in a pan until very soft. Add the garlic and cook for a couple of minutes.
  2. Place all the other ingredients into a bowl and combine. Add the ingredients to the onion and garlic in the pan and simmer gently for 20 minutes.
  3. Allow to cool and liquidise until smooth.

Barbecue Sauce #2


  • 140g of ketchup
  • 1 tsp black treacle
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp of wholegrain mustard
  • 1/2 tsp sweet smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp hot smoked paprika
  • 1 dash of Tabasco
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • black pepper, freshly ground


  1. Combine all ingredients in a pan and cook gently for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Allow to cool and use as a glaze or a dip.

Both of these barbecue sauces deliver on flavour. The first has a rich, smoky flavour but takes a while to prepare.

The second doesn’t even need to be cooked if you don’t want it to but I found that cooking helps bring out the paprika and mustard a little better.
